Summary:
Celebrity photographer-in-training Jess Leighton desperately needs to crash the wedding of the year. Snapping just one pic of the A-list Hollywood couple tying the knot will pay her way through school, but with security tighter than the bride-to-be's corset, she'll  need more than her camera and smarts - she'll need help from her biggest rival, William Harrigan. Hot, motorcycle-riding Will is the last person Jess trusts, but he's her only ticket in. Good-looking, charming, and

British, he's a triple threat. And he's got that sexy accent to boot. Soon, sparks are flying off-screen and in front of the cameras as they devise a plan to sneak into the ceremony. But when Jess' new celebrity client raises the stakes with a photo shoot of the maid-of-honor, she wonders if she's in over her head. Blackmail, botox, and the worst Breakfast Club remake in the world? It's all in a whirlwind week's work in Hollywood. The audience loves a happy ending, but in a town where everyone's acting and no one's playing on the same team, can Jess find her own ever after in time?

EXCITING NEW BOOK NEWS

Normally, I like to do very structured posts. I'm not one for off-the-cuff, spur-of-the-moment posts ever since I discovered the scheduling feature, and I usually leave book news to websites and blogs actually devoted to such things. However, this is news that I just can't hold back.

ANDREW SMITH JUST ANNOUNCED THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL TO WINGER.

Yeah. Winger. Aka, one of the best books I read in all of 2013. A book that I stayed up half the night on a work night to finish, then spent a good while crying myself to sleep after because of all the emotions it stirred in me. The book I love so much I rated it 5 stars and listed it in at least 7 Top Ten Tuesdays (and have plans to include it on this upcoming week's list as well) and raved about it in my 2013 End of Year Book Survey. I love this book so much that I have a hardcover (which I happened to have gotten signed this past Saturday when I saw Andrew at YAK Fest and he was clearly sitting on this news the whole time!) and the ARC I received from Simon & Schuster at TLA last year and refuse to give away.

Can we take a second to admire the fact that my
incredibly boyish bedspread coordinates with the cover?

For those of you who haven't even heard of Winger (WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!), here's the summary:

Ryan Dean West is a fourteen-year-old junior at a boarding school for rich kids. He’s living in Opportunity Hall, the dorm for troublemakers, and rooming with the biggest bully on the rugby team. And he’s madly in love with his best friend Annie, who thinks of him as a little boy.

With the help of his sense of humor, rugby buddies, and his penchant for doodling comics, Ryan Dean manages to survive life’s complications and even find some happiness along the way. But when the unthinkable happens, he has to figure out how to hold on to what’s important, even when it feels like everything has fallen apart.

Filled with hand-drawn info-graphics and illustrations and told in a pitch-perfect voice, this realistic depiction of a teen’s experience strikes an exceptional balance of hilarious and heartbreaking.

Go check it out on Goodreads, and look at all the raving reviews. I don't personally know anyone who didn't love it. While you're there, you may as well go ahead and add the as-of-yet untitled sequel as well.

Now, those of you who are really observant will see that I stated I have two copies of Winger. But, in the picture above, there are clearly three copies. So, what gives? Like I said, I saw Andrew at YAK Fest last weekend. I had a bunch of his books to be signed for an enormous Andrew-Smith-themed giveaway, probably when I finally got my hands on Grasshopper Jungle. Eff that noise. No better day than today! I'm holding onto the other books for another time, but in celebration of this amazing news, I'm giving away a signed copy of Winger. Open to the US & Canada. Ends 12 AM February 11.

Cover Love 5: With bonus new book alert!

NEW COVERS! My favorite!

First, a book that I know I will love. Look Razorbill, I adore Richelle Mead. So WHY do you not give her incredible covers? This is a disappointment for sure. Not a fan of the way Sydney and Adrian are just plopped right on here or the way their bodies fade by the tile. It's awkward all the way around. Also, slightly worried about what this means for The Fiery Heart (OUT TODAY!!!!!) because on FH, their bodies are angled together. The distance between them and the angle of their bodies away from one another concerns me (and from that summary, I have a definite feeling that I know what the problem is). Then again, Richelle's good at using books 4 & 5 to rip our hearts out.

In contrast, i think this is a really cool cover. I like that there aren't any people on this one.

And the NEW BOOK ALERT goes to Kiersten White and Jim Di Bartolo's surprise collaboration. If Jim's artwork looks familiar, it's because he's Laini Taylor's hubby and the artist who helped co-author some of her books, including the lovely Lips Touch: Three Times, which I loved. You can read Kiersten's blog post about it here. Can't wait to read this!

In the Shadows
Kiersten White & Jim Di Bartolo
April 29, 2014
Scholastic

Summary:
From the remarkable imagination of acclaimed artist Jim Di Bartolo and the exquisite pen of bestselling author Kiersten White comes a spellbinding story of love, mystery, and dark conspiracy, told in an alternating narrative of words and pictures.

Cora and Minnie are sisters living in a small, stifling town where strange and mysterious things occur. Their mother runs the local boarding house. Their father is gone. The woman up the hill may or may not be a witch.

Thomas and Charles are brothers who've been exiled to the boarding house so Thomas can tame his ways and Charles can fight an illness that is killing him with increasing speed. Their family history is one of sorrow and guilt. They think they can escape from it . . . but they can't.

Arthur is also new to the boarding house. His fate is tied to that of Cora, Minnie, Thomas, and Charles. He knows what darkness circles them, but can't say why, and doesn't even know if they can be saved.

Sinister forces are working in the shadows, manipulating fates and crafting conspiracies. The closer Cora, Minnie, Arthur, Thomas, and Charles get to the truth, the closer they get to harm. But the threat is much bigger than they can see. It is strangling the world.

Until one of the boys decides he wants to save it.

Told in an astonishing mix of art and words,
IN THE SHADOWS collides past against future, love against evil, and hope against fear. The result is both a mystery and a masterpiece.

What do you think about these lovelies? Will you be reading them based on their covers? Or will it be their summaries or their reputations? Or do you pass? Let me know!

New book alert! Night of Cake & Puppets by Laini Taylor

Last week, I listed Dreams of Gods and Monsters, the third book of Laini Taylor's acclaimed Daughter of Smoke and Bone as my pick for Waiting on Wednesday. Today on her blog, Laini dropped the bomb that this past spring, she took a short break from Dreams and wrote a DoS&B novella entitled "Night of Cake and Puppets," which tells the complete tale of Zuze & Mik's meeting. *drops jaw* Why have there not been more of these novellas from this series? There are SO MANY potential short stories from this world. I have to say, I'm really glad, though, that it's about Mik & Zuze because the angels and the chimera have a lot of stories already. Let's hear it for the humans! Here's the cover:

"Night of Cake and Puppets"
a Daughter of Smoke & Bone novella
by Laini Taylor
November 26, 2013
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary:
In Night of Cake & Puppets, Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy—the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Told in alternating perspectives, it’s the perfect love story for fans of the series and new readers alike. Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her “rabid fairy,” her “voodoo eyes” are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or “Violin Boy,” her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It’s a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter’s night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself! Violin Boy’s not going to know what hit him.

What do you think? Will you be picking up this sure-to-be-delightful novella? I know I will! My thoughts:
