Lovestruck Tour Recap

The second book event I attended during my big trip in February was the Lovestruck Tour featuring Robin Constantine (The Promise of Amazing), Megan Miranda (Fracture), Megan Shepherd (The Madman's Daughter), and Kasie West (Pivot Point). I attended the tour stop at the Little Shop of Stories in Decatur (aka Atlanta), Georgia, which means I also got to see Lauren Morrill (Being Sloane Jacobs), who I met at last year's Dark Days of Winter Tour, and I also got to finally meet one of my favorite blogger friends, Aly of My Heart Hearts Books!

 me with Aly!

I was a little late to the signing because I had an eye appointment in Knoxville, TN, at 2, and this thing started at 7. ZERO extra time, but luckily my appointment went quickly, and traffic was good. I did allow myself a 5 minute stop at the Chattanooga McKays, but I was kind of disappointed that the books were so much more expensive than the Knoxville one. I understand why new fiction is worth more, but I'm sorry. It's a used bookstore; I'm not paying $18 for a used book, even if it's brand-new and in good condition. But I digress. The traffic gods were with me, and I made it about 5 minutes after they started so it was right into the Q&A after I ran upstairs (I seriously didn't miss anything. I could hear them blurbing their books as I bought a few downstairs). As such, I was a little less organized than usual, but I had already created the document on my tablet to take notes. However, as you'll notice, I did not keep track of the order everyone answered, which I usually do. Instead, I listed the authors alphabetically. Please don't stone me. :P As I was formatting this post, I was able to piece some of them together in the correct order based on the authors' answers.

Review: Being Sloane Jacobs

Rating: 5 stars
Pub Date: January 7, 2014
Publisher: Delacorte Press (Random House)
Genre: young adult contemporary, romance, aports
Format/Source: DRC, Netgalley
Status: standalone

Summary:
Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

Top Ten Tuesday #30: Best of 2013 part 2

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and The Bookish. Each week the girls at B&B think up a fun theme, and participating bloggers post their favorite 10 books in that category. This week's theme is

Top Ten Books of 2013
Well, it would be way, way too hard to pick the top 10 overall in 2013 so instead, I'm just going to do a sequel post to the TTT I did earlier this year, which you can read here.

1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Let's just get this one out of the way now. I actually did write and read fanfic in college so I absolutely understand and relate to Cath.

2. United We Spy by Ally Carter. I thought this was a really fitting ending to the legacy of the Gallagher Girls, an ending this wonderful series deserved.

3. Scarlet & Cress by Marissa Meyer. I enjoyed Cinder, but adding the new characters and complicating the conflict really added depth to this wonderful series. Is it time for Winter yet?!

4. Shadow & Bone and Siege & Storm by Leigh Bardugo. This series is incredible. I mean the Grisha Trilogy is simply the textbook definition of epic fantasy. Great character development (including bad boys, good guys, roguish pirates, badA girls, AND delicious flirty princes), fast-paced action, swoony romance, unique mythology, and amazing writing.

5. Just Like Fate by Cat Patrick & Suzanne Young. Not only does this series have one of my favorite new romances, but it also introduced me to the intriguing concept of the sliding doors device, in which there are two alternate stories being told simultaneously.

6. Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano. This is one of those novels with a really cool retro-future, and it combines that feel with a murder mystery, set against a backdrop of the sky. There's so much going on in this novel, and somehow, Lauren keeps it all straight. Not only is the story interesting, but the characters are well-developed and relatable. I am already wishing for Burning Kingdoms!

7. Pawn by Aimée Carter. Such a cool novel filled with tons of intrigue. I'm very excited by this new series!

8. One & Only by Viv Daniels. This is a superbly written new adult romance. If all romances were written like this, the genre would not receive as much criticism as it does. Well done, Viv!

9. Taste the Heat by Rachel Harris. Super adorable and fun adult romance.

10. Playing Dirty by Jennifer Echols. Jenn is one of my top-five all-time favorite authors. Her 2013 ya Dirty Little Secret only misses this list because Playing Dirty is on here instead. This is an adult romance that is slightly steamier than Taste the Heat above, and it was just an absolute joy to read.

Bonus: top 2014 ARCs I've already read

I already mentioned Cress above, but I didn't want to leave out these other wonderful 2014 reads.

Biggest Flirts by Jennifer Echols. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this way back in September. It's another hit for Jenn. Biggest Flirts is the perfect mix of fun shenanigans, top-notch chemistry between the main characters, and relatable life drama. I loved it!

Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill. This is absolutely The Parent Trap mixed with every ice skating movie Disney and ABC Family has ever made, and I love it. It's cheesy and silly and fun and flirty. Loved it!

The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes. I love these ya novels full of hijinks and high school intrigue. It never turns out well for the characters (or at least as they intend their schemes to turn out), but it's SO entertaining to witness!

Infinite by Jodi Meadows. This is one of the most wonderful and complete series enders I've ever read. Full review coming soon, and I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. This is just a really emotional ride, and it's one that is not to be missed!

Top Ten Tuesday #27: Winter TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and The Bookish. Each week the girls at B&B think up a fun theme, and participating bloggers post their favorite 10 books in that category. This week's theme is

Top Ten Books on My Winter 2013/2014 TBR
I also had The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine and Roomies by Tara Altebrando & Sara Zarr on my list, buuuuut...I kinda already read them. So I guess it's a good thing that I'm already ahead! That's a nice change!

1. Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill. I met Lauren in February. I immediately read Meant to Be and really enjoyed it. I love the unique premise of her newest novel, and I can't wait to get into it!

2. Cold Spell by Jackson Pearce. I didn't realize just how connected the events of this series were until I read Fathomless. Basically, crap is gonna go down in this novel, and I'm glad my library has finally ordered its copies! About time, y'all!

3. The F-It List by Julie Halpern. I'm loving all the bucket list books coming out right now because it's so cool to see what tasks are important to different people and how they goes about completing those tasks. This one caught my attention on Netgalley. I wasn't approved for it, but that just made me want it more!

4. Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd. I find it absolutely fascinating that Megan is continuing the story but drawing inspiration from different gothic classics for each installment. Brilliant! HDC is going to be a sort of Jekyll & Hyde so that's going to be interesting. Also, I need some more Montgomery. You don't just end a novel like that, Megan. Sheesh!

5. Infinite by Jodi Meadows. The Newsoul trilogy is so incredibly unique, and Jodi's writing is full of feels. I MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. *grabby hands for Sam* *thinks for a second* *slaps Maura's hands away* No, Maura. You had your turn! :P

6. Let the Storm Break by Shannon Messenger. Vale and Audra's romance is really sweet, but with the ending of Let the Sky Fall, things are going to be drastically different in this sequel. I hope everything is okay for them!

7. Perfect Lies by Kiersten White. Mind Games is pretty different from Kiersten's other work, but it was really cool. I just got the novella "Annie & Fia" and that's tiding me over until I can read the full book.

8. Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy. You can read my full reasons why in my WoW post for SEMV, but I love the bucket-list-haha-not-really premise. Can't wait for this one!

9. The Treatment by Suzanne Young. There's no way I can wait until closer to pub time to find out what's going to happen to Sloane and James!

10. Waterfell by Amalie Howard. Whimsical Mama Maura talked this one up so much that I can't wait to read it!

What books (and book boyfriends!) are going to keep you warm this winter? Let me know & feel free to share your TTT links!

Authors galore! Multiple signing recaps

In the past month, I have had the incredible pleasure to attend two author events. The first was during the first part of the Dark Days Tour with Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, Tahereh Mafi, and Veronica Rossi. I plane, train and automobiled myself from Dallas to Atlanta (okay, I really just took megabus the Knight Bus and stole borrowed my mom's car) where I had the supreme pleasure of visiting the Little Shop of Stories for the first time. If you're a book lover, this place is where you want to pilgrimmage. The staff is great, and they hold signings and events all. the. time.

The second signing was part of Stephenie Meyer's Host tour, in anticipation of the movie release. Actors Jake Abel and Max Irons were also in attendance (!!!!!!) and this was quite possibly the best-run/most efficient (if long, because that line was ridiculous, although not as long as the one for Richelle Mead last year in Lexington) signing I've ever witnessed. Mad props to the staff at the Lincoln Park Barnes & Noble in Dallas for getting it done!
