“I’ve got to get a call out or a text message, but I haven’t had a signal for the last couple of hours.” I put my backpack on and wrapped my cape over it.

Say what you will about a cape; I’d be the only one warm tonight if we got stuck out here. My eyes slid to Hannah. I could probably be talked into sharing it.

Blinking, I forced myself to snap out of it. Just because she remembered some random moment we shared in fifth grade didn’t mean the past was forgiven. But it had been cool to find out she hadn’t forgotten. That it was still important to her under all the Mean Girl crap she’d worn like armor since junior high.

“I’m going with you.” She stared at me with her inscrutable eyes, her red hair curling around her shoulders damply now that the snow fell so heavy.

“It’s safer for you here.” I didn’t need her slowing me down.

“Doesn’t matter. We’re partners. Buddy system, remember? No arguing.” She yanked her ski cap down farther beneath her helmet so it covered her ears more. “I’m going.”

“Don’t go all stubborn on me,” I warned. “This isn’t the same as talking your way out of a homework assignment. There are real dangers in these woods and they’re only getting worse as it gets dark.”

Her eyes narrowed. Her mouth flattened into a thin line. “Which is why I need to protect you.”

“From bears?” I couldn’t resist.

“Exactly. I think we can both agree I have bigger claws than you.” She dug her poles in the snow. “Now get moving before we lose more light.”

I said nothing. I just started skiing.

We trudged silently for a while, the snow too fresh for any kind of speed. But after a few minutes she sidled closer.

“Thanks for not arguing with me.”

“I did argue. You just refused to listen.”

She flipped long, damp strands of auburn behind one shoulder as she sighed. “I know you think I’m this super mean chick, but—”

“You’re strong and you’re tough. That part’s cool.”

“Really?” Her voice sounded uncertain in a way that hit me right in the chest.

I swallowed down the feeling, not ready for it. Not now.

“Definitely. I don’t mind that you wanted to come with me, Hannah. I like that you speak your mind.” I debated how to put the next part. “It’s when you snark on people to make them feel small…that’s mean. But I don’t think that’s really you.”

Let her chew on that. I waited for her to jab me in the kidney with a ski pole or step on the back of my ski. But she was so quiet the only sound I heard for a long moment was the rhythmic thunk of her poles in the snow.

“Of course it’s me. I’m the one who does it.”

“Yeah, but you do it because your friends expect you to. You got a reputation for being the mean girl, and now you don’t know how to quit.”

She stopped. Skis, poles, arms…all of it just kind of wilted right there. I paused, too, turning around to see her face scrunched in a weird, thoughtful way. Frowning, she reached for her chest, her palm and her ski pole resting there like she was holding herself together.

“What?” I edged backward toward her. “Did you lose something?”

I couldn’t see the ground clearly in the shadows of shrinking daylight, but I scanned for anything she might have dropped.

“How do you know that?” She moved closer in a way that made my pulse leap. “I mean—why would you ever give me the benefit of the doubt?”

One of her skis slid between mine. She was that close.

I swallowed hard.

“You don’t fool me, Hannah.” I shrugged. “I judge people based on what I observe. What I know.”

“One time, I locked Bobby Randall in the girls’ room. His friends still call him Flush.”

“Everyone knew he was going to get pounded that day by a senior wrestler from another school. It was obvious to me you saved his life.”

She rolled her eyes. “I steal hall passes from Ms. Hanrahan’s desk all the time.”

“You and everyone else.” I noticed that I couldn’t see her freckles as well now that the sun was setting.

“I shoved Lauren Carlson off a cliff at camp.”

“Definitely mean. But it was a small cliff, if I remember correctly. And you were having the year from hell.”

She gasped. “How did you—”

“I pay way too much attention to you.”

A Mad Wicked Folly
by Sharon Biggs Waller
Coming January 23, 2014
Viking Juvenile

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18079501-a-mad-wicked-folly

Summary:

Welcome to the world of the fabulously wealthy in London, 1909, where dresses and houses are overwhelmingly opulent, social class means everything, and women are taught to be nothing more than wives and mothers. Into this world comes seventeen-year-old Victoria Darling, who wants only to be an artist—a nearly impossible dream for a girl.

After Vicky poses nude for her illicit art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school. Shamed and scandalized, her parents try to marry her off to the wealthy Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. But Vicky has other things on her mind: her clandestine application to the Royal College of Art; her participation in the suffragette movement; and her growing attraction to a working-class boy who may be her muse—or may be the love of her life. As the world of debutante balls, corsets, and high society obligations closes in around her, Vicky must figure out: just how much is she willing to sacrifice to pursue her dreams?

Why I want it:
I lovelovelovelovelovelovelove Victorian/Edwardian England. I find the culture absolutely intriguing. The fashion. The architecture. The music. The dancing. The art. The society! I believe in modern feminism as much as the next self-respecting woman, but there is something fascinating about reading about a male-dominant society with a plucky heroine who won't be held down. Plus this summary reminds me just a bit of Titanic, only slightly backwards, you know? Rich girl, poor boy, but SHE is the artist this time. Get it, Vicky!

Why I think you should want it:
I suppose for the same reasons I want it. I have not read anything else by Sharon Biggs Waller so I'm afraid I can't give a personal recommendation/argument like I usually do, but I do know that early reviews have been really good. Also, Sharon's editor is the fabulous Leila Sales, which means AMWF is destined to be amazing! What do you think? Do you want to read A Mad Wicked Folly? What draws you to it?

Top Ten Tuesday #28: New-to-Me Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and The Bookish. Each week the girls at B&B think up a fun theme, and participating bloggers post their favorite 10 books in that category. This week's theme is

Top Ten Authors I'd Never Read Before 2013
I've read a lot of authors for the first time this year, and, like always, it was really difficult to just narrow it down to ten. I had to rack my brain for the authors of the most un-put-downable books that I read, the authors whose 2014 books are in a dead tie for the Give it Now or I'll Cut You award, the authors whose books and characters dominate a lot of my TTTs and WoWs and book survey answers. I'm including links to my reviews of their work to give more extensive reasons why I love them.

1. Elana K. Arnold. Elana was such a surprise to me. I saw Burning on Netgalley and thought it looked good and had a reallly cool summary. This was in my early NG days so I didn't get very many approvals. I was SO shocked when Random House not only approved me, but offered a copy for me to giveaway. That blew my mind, and then Burning turned out to be freaking AMAZING, which is why it made my top 10 of 2013...part 1. Burning review here.

2. Leigh Bardugo. Somehow, I missed Shadow and Bone when it came out, but I got on the train for Siege and Storm! My one regret is that Leigh was actually here in Dallas a few months ago, and I missed out on that event, dangit. *facepalm* *headdesk* But hey, maybe that shirtless grudge match I keep requesting that she write will happen. That would make it all better. :D Siege and Storm review here.

3. Rachel Harris. Rachel has become such a dear friend this year. I am a proud card-carrying member of the Flirt Squad, Rachel's street team. It's not just that Rachel is a great woman and amazing friend, but she's always a lovely writer. Her ya and adult novels alike turn me into a giggly, melty romantic puddle. A Tale of Two Centuries review here.

4. Katie McGarry. Katie's writing is magical. I stayed up late for days reading through the entire Pushing the Limits series. I am desperate for Take Me On and any and all future books in the series. Especially if Logan happens to get his own book. Crash Into You review here.

5. Marissa Meyer. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet Marissa this year. She's lovely, and her books are so creative and fun! Cinder was great, Scarlet was greater, and Cress is (so far) the greatest! I have no doubt Winter will continue the trend and make for a fantastic ending! Marissa is actually the only author on this list whose books I haven't formally reviewed, but I will be doing an audiobook review for Cinder and a review of Cress very soon as well as posting a guest review for Cinder so hopefully that makes up for lost time!

6. Rainbow Rowell. I haven't looked at any other TTT posts today because of work, but I have a feeling Rainbow probably dominated the lists. Both Eleanor & Park and Fangirl were engaging, relatable, clever books. Fangirl really did sound like a fictionalized account of my first couple years of college because it was so familiar to me! Another 2013 favorite! Fangirl review here.

7. Andrew Smith. I've spent the past 6 months talking about how amazing Winger is. You really should read it. I stayed up way too late finishing it and spent 30 minutes afterward crying myself to sleep (but that's always a good thing so don't let that scare you). Andrew is another author I'm glad I met at TLA, and I'm super stoked to see him again in 2014! Winger review here.

Cheating: It wouldn't be Top Ten(ish) Tuesday if I didn't include more than ten on my list so I'm including three writing duos who blew my mind this year.

8 & 9. Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner. These Broken Stars is incredible! From the gorgeous cover to the beautiful words inside, it's an absolutely stunning work of art! I love that Amie and Megan were able to flawlessly blend their styles and their concepts to create a book that is chock full of great inspiration but also wholly unique. These Broken Stars review here.

10 & 11. Cat Patrick & Suzanne Young. Just Like Fate was another surprise digital approval. I absolutely LOVED it. It's yet another best of 2013 for me. I loved the whole sliding doors device, and it got me excited to find more novels like it. I haven't read Cat's solo work yet, but I did read Suzanne's The Program, which was also a great, original story. Very excited to see more by both these ladies! Just Like Fate review here & The Program review here.

12 & 13. Joanne & Karen Rock aka J.K. Rock. Rachel spoke very highly of these lovely ladies and their darling novel Camp Boyfriend. I am so glad I pushed everything aside to read it. Camp Boyfriend is a cute and fluffy but also substantial contemporary romance. I immediately joined up with the Rock Stars, Joanne & Karen's street team, and it was most definitely the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Congrats on your "Camp Christmas" release day, ladies!!!! Camp Boyfriend review here.

Novella Review: Phoenix Overture by Jodi Meadows

Rating: 5 stars
Pub Date: September, 2013
Publisher: Harper Impulse
Genre: young adult fantasy, adventure
Format/Source: Kindle ebook, my own copy
Status: #2.5 in the Newsoul trilogy
Summary:

In the wilds around the Community where Sam and his family have taken shelter, life is dangerous. Dragons, trolls, centaurs, and other monsters fill the world. The word comes from the council that everyone must leave and journey to rescue their leader, Janan, who has been abducted by a mysterious new enemy in the north. Faced with overwhelming threats that bring death and destruction, Sam and the others reach the northern Range and, reunited with Janan, are given an unimaginable opportunity. Although it would give them the privilege to live and learn and love without fear, the choice is not without its own dire consequences. And lives—though not theirs—are sure to be lost. Just how much are they willing to give up to save themselves?

Review:
I'm going to go ahead and warn you right now. Ana is not in this novella. At all. No awesome Samana kissing scenes. Total bummer, I know. Now get over it. Those two crazy kids make out enough in Incarnate. And Asunder. And Infinite, apparently. Phoenix Overture is Sam's story so give our boy a chance. Not only do we meet young Sam, but events that transpire in Phoenix directly relate to the primary plot of the trilogy. Basically, this is the origin story of the trilogy. Is it 100% essential to read? You can read the trilogy and not read Phoenix, and you'll still know what's going on. BUT WHY WOULD YOU NOT READ IT?! 1. Sam. 2. You know all that crazy stuff that went down at the end of both Incarnate and Asunder? You figure out why all that happened. 3. Sam. 4. Sam is taken, but did you know Sam had a brother? I sure didn't, but now I'm in love. 5. Sam's brother is single. Awww, yeah. Reasons 6-5342583. Sam. All Sam, all the time.

I think the best part of Phoenix Overture really is the added depth to Sam's character. Sam has, to put it lightly, serious daddy issues. Also some mommy issues, but we'll call it 84-16 dad-to-mom issue ratio. He has a lot of baggage. Sam is so open, so kind, so loving in Incarnate and Asunder. To see what he overcame to become that way is really inspiring. It's so weird because he's a timid boy and not the musical virtuoso in Phoenix, but we get to witness his evolution into a more confident man. Plus, we get to see lots of adorable scenes with his big brother Fayden (dibsity dibs!) and the moment he becomes friends with Stef.

The other great part of Phoenix Overture really is the origin story. Janan being a macho and mucho pain in the butt? Check. Other characters from Incarnate and Asunder being directly involved in the events that caused the tilogy? Check. The creation of the epic Sam-vs-the-dragons battle across the millenia? CHECK.

While this novella doesn't showcase the amazing Jodi Meadows patent romance, it does show off Jodi's awesome epic fantasy-writing skills. There's adventure and danger and so. many. feels. I sobbed openly during the last two and a half chapters and yelled at my tablet for the last one. So...yeah. Prepare to have your heart ripped out and drooled on by an acid-spitting dragon. You know what? Worth it. I am now more excited for Infinite than ever!

About Sarah Daltry:
Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She’s written works in various genres – romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn’t as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she’s been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships – romantic, familial, friendly – because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn’t matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future – human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah’s stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn’t writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden’s Fall series, and the Flowering series, including Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, and Star of Bethlehem.

About Pete Clark:

Pete Clark likes writing, animals, potato chips, and cheese. Midnight Riders is his first published novel, although he can also proudly say he finally finished Helix Crashing, the fantasy novel he has been working on for over a decade. In addition, he has written Across the Barren Landscape, a collection of linked Western short stories. He also writes plays, both dramatic and comedic.

When he is not writing, Pete tends to ignore everyone around him and obsess over sports.
