Monthly wrap-up: February

February is a tough month every year. That's probably why it's short, but then, being short is part of the problem. Lose-lose. I've had some setbacks and frustrations this month in every aspect of my life, and that sent me spinning. To be very honest with you, I have depression so there were days when I didn't know if I could push myself out of bed at all, let alone read and blog and work and function like a human being. My trip was utterly restorative, however, and I had a blast meeting authors and bloggers and readers in several cities across three states. I've got a couple of really amazing pieces of news coming very soon, and I can't wait to share them with you.

And that's part of what makes March so exciting and also part of my super awesome upcoming news!

Looking back...
List of February reads

Jodi Lynn Anderson - Tiger Lily
Elizabeth Eulberg - Better Off Friends
Abbi Glines - Take a Chance (Rosemary Beach #6)
John Green & David Levithan - Will Grayson, Will Grayson audiobook
Sophie Jordan - Uninvited (Uninvited #1)
Richelle Mead - Shadow Kiss graphic novel
Megan Miranda - Hysteria
Sarah Ockler - #scandal
Veronica Rossi - Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky #1) audiobook
Rainbow Rowell - Eleanor & Park audiobook
Leila Sales - This Song Will Save Your Life
Philip Siegel - The Break-Up Artist (Break-Up Artist #1)
Jennifer E. Smith - The Geography of You and Me
Courtney C. Stevens - Faking Normal
Kasie West - On the Fence
Kiersten White - Perfect Lies (Mind Games #2)

Looking ahead...
March releases I'm excited about:
Let the Storm Break - Shannon Messenger: 4th
The Winner's Curse - Marie Rutkoski: 4th
Nil - Lynne Matson: 4th
Side Effects May Vary - Julie Murphy: 18th

March TBR:
February was short and I had a lot of events with books to read so I only got to two of the four books I had earmarked in my January wrap-up
We Were Liars - E. Lockhart
The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton

Also, I want to get to these:
Open Road Summer - Emery Lord
The Treatment - Suzanne Young
The Taking - Kimberly Derting
After the End - Amy Plum

Resolution Progress:
You can check out my full resolution post HERE, but I'm just going to gloss over these really quickly.
1. Post more reviews: I posted 6 reviews this month, which is the same as January. Better than almost any month in 2013, but still fewer than I'd like. Part of it was the short month and my weeklong break, but I really want to be a better reviewer.
2. Create a backlist for schedule-able reviews: Nope nope nope. Will it ever happen? Let's hope March is kinder!
3. Read 150 books: Still doing well, I'm at 33 right now with a couple more sure to be finished by March 2, but this is not a resolution I'm worried about. I can hit 150 so easily in a year.
4. Reread 20 books: Still going strong! 9 down!
5. Listen to 20 audiobooks: Again, doing well on this one. I'm having trouble finding new audiobooks in my library so please give me some suggestions. Part of the problem is the library has a lot of book 1 and 2, but they're missing some series enders, and that makes me not want to pick them up until I can binge-listen.
6. Read 5 classics: Didn't work, but The Outsiders is one of the first books on tap for March.
7. Blog redesign: This is still a resolution I'm going to have to wait for, but it's well worth it.
8. Make more blogger friends: YES! Working! I actually met several bloggers in the flesh this month, which was SUPER COOL, and I've struck up conversations with many people I've never talked to before.
9. Read at the gym: I'm failing miserably at this. Short month. Weeklong travel. Long work hours.
10. Be more organized: Also failing miserably. I left my blog notebook at my grandmother's house while on my trip. It's like being without my brain. Also, I brought so many books back that I'm seriously cramped for space at the moment. Today, I went on a cleaning binge so things look a bit nicer. I just have a lot more work to do in this particular arena.

Challenge Progress:
I signed up for a LOT of challenges this year. I wondered if I was crazy or suddenly decided I liked masochism, but so far, it's going really well. The good thing is that some of my books count for multiple challenges, which is really helpful. You can check out the full details of my challenges HERE or track my progress in the challenges tab at the top, but here's a quick rundown on where I am today:

2014 New Challenges:
Standalone Challenge: 4/15 (and working on #5 right now!)
Series Challenge: 9/12. There's not an option to increase this goal so this is pretty crazy. I'm already 75% finished!
Netgalley & Edelweiss Challenge: 12/25. I'm doing great with the reading, now I need to make sure to catch up with the reviews!
Real Book Challenge: 13 of 21-30
Jumble Your Genres Challenge: 2/12
TBR Pile Challenge: 15 of 11-20. Need to update my goal on this one because I'm about to pass the reach goal!
A-Z Challenge: 4/26

Challenges already in progress:
50 State Challenge: 32/52
50 Countries Challenge: 18/50
YA Challenge: 4/25

The winning title will be revealed at BEA 2014 and if you commented to vote and will attend BEA, we will give you a signed copy of the galley (limited to the first 20 commenters attending). Spotlight: Side Effects May Vary

Today, I want to tell you about a book you guys have been hearing a lot about in the last few months. This is Julie Murphy's Side Effects May Vary. It's getting a lot of attention for being a bucket list book, a book about cancer (which has forced comparisons to that other book about cancer). I read SEMV a few weeks ago, and OHMYGOSH, it's so good. Julie has taken this book beyond being A Book About Cancer and truly explored how the relationships that mean the most to us can be either healing or toxic and what to do when it's the second type. I was so surprised that I was able to relate so much to the story considering I've never been sick the way Alice is, and I am awed by Julie's talent and the rawness of Alice and Harvey's story. This is one of those books that's going to have people talking for months and years. I don't want to give away too much right now because I'm actually posting a full review as part of the SEMV blog tour in a few weeks, but I wanted to spotlight it now and get you guys excited!

Release Date: March 18, 2014
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Genre: young adult contemporary, realistic fiction

Summary:
What if you’d been living your life as if you were dying—only to find out that you had your whole future ahead of you?

When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with leukemia, her prognosis is grim. To maximize the time she does have, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs—however she sees fit. She convinces her friend Harvey, whom she knows has always had feelings for her, to help her with a crazy bucket list that’s as much about revenge (humiliating her ex-boyfriend and getting back at her arch nemesis) as it is about hope (doing something unexpectedly kind for a stranger and reliving some childhood memories). But just when Alice’s scores are settled, she goes into remission.

Now Alice is forced to face the consequences of all that she’s said and done, as well as her true feelings for Harvey. But has she done irreparable damage to the people around her, and to the one person who matters most?

Weekly wrap-up: Februay 16-22

This week was a mad scramble to attend events, work, and pack before my big road trip Thursday so not a lot of reading or blogging got done, and sadly, I wasn't thrilled with any of the books I did read. I started listening to Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick, and I'm sure it's going to be an awesome book, but I haven't read it yet, and the audiobook isn't the best. I think I'm going to have to postpone the audio until I can read it.

Completed:
Tiger Lily - Jodi Lynn Anderson: 2 stars. I can't say I wasn't warned. This book started off soooo slowwwly. I had a really hard time getting into it to the point that I wondered if I should abandon it. I just wasn't feeling the characters, and there wasn't exactly a primary plot going on, just a series of events that happened to or because of Tiger Lily.

Reread:
Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell, Rebecca Lowman & Sunil Malhotra: 3.5 stars. Regular E&P got 4 stars from me, possibly 4.5, but the audio just wasn't what I exactly wanted. Again, I was distracted by Rebecca reading for Eleanor because in my mind, she's Cath from fangirl. Sunil's character voices weren't distinct enough, but I did love his voices for both of Park's parents, who are wonderful. I gotta say, listening to this audiobook in the car on a long trip with lots of construction wasn't the smartest idea I've ever had because of course I cried. That ending! I mean, how can you not?!

Currently Reading:
I am positive it is one of the following, but at the time I wrote this (feverishly Wednesday night, just before leaving on my epic adventure!), I had not yet started reading one.
Fracture - Megan Miranda
On the Fence - Kasie West
Pivot Point - Kasie West

New to my bookshelf this week:
Library:
Under the Never Sky audiobook - Veronica Rossi
Airhead audiobook - Meg Cabot

Bought:
Postponed until next week because, really, wouldn't you rather see a picture of the whole group from all my events? Of course you would!

Events Attended:
2/17: Marissa Meyer's Cress Tour @ Austin, TX
2/20: Dark Days Tour feat Sophie Jordan, Tahereh Mafi, Veronica Rossi & Kiersten West @ Nashville, TN (feat bonus appearances by Ransom Riggs, Stephanie Perkins, Beth Revis, Victoria Schwab & Courtney C. Stevens)

She's hoping that a summer of free room and board working with her aunt at the Willow Inn will help her forget. Except there's a problem: the resident handyman is none other than Levi Andrews. The handsome quarterback was once her friend-and maybe more--until everything changed in a life-shattering instant. She was hoping to avoid him, possibly forever. Levi can't believe he's living with the one person who holds all his painful memories. More than anything he wants to make things right, but a simple "sorry" won't suffice--not when the tragedy that scarred them was his fault. Levi knows Pixie's better off without him, but every part of him screams to touch her, protect her, wrap her in his arms, and kiss away the pain. Yet even though she's so close, Pixie's heart seems more unreachable than ever. Seeing those stunning green eyes again has made one thing perfectly clear--he can't live without her.
